Pedro C.B. Fernandes (b. 1966) graduated in Chemical Engineering by Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) – Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (UTL), in 1989. From 1989 to 1991 he worked as research trainee for Quatrum SA (Lisboa, Portugal), assigned to the design of processes for the microbial production of therapeutic steroids (1989-1992). Pedro received a MSc diploma in Biotechnology/Biochemical Engineering in 1994 and a PhD diploma in Biotechnology in October 1999, both from IST-UTL and under the supervision of Professor Helena Pinheiro, with works on the microbial transformation of steroids. Pedro was hired as Assistant Lecturer at Instituto Superior de Humanidades e Tecnologia – ISHT, in 1995. He became Assistant Professor, in 1999 as ISHT evolved to Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias – ULHT. Up to 2008 he was Head of Chair of several disciplines in the syllabus of the course in Engenharia Biotecnológica at ULHT, where he resumed teaching activity in 2013 to present.
Pedro has been involved in research activity in applied biocatalysis from 1999 to present at the Bioengineering Research Group (BERG) at IST, where he is particularly involved in the design and operation of enzyme microreactors. He is also keen on exploring the potential of hydrogels, for the rational immobilization of enzymes and cells. Within this scope, he has been involved in the supervision of PhD and MSc theses and Post-Doc students, with over 80 papers in peer refereed journals and 17 book chapters.
Team member in four FCT funded projects and two EU funded projects
